Rimple and Harpreet Narula, the label was established in the year 2000. The aesthetic reflects their passion for couture as well as our rich and diverse textile and craft heritage.
The influence of craftsmanship of nomads, the wanderers and the traveling tribes as well as the vivid cultures of Central Asia and undivided India have been a constant source of inspiration to the designer duo. Their body of work reflects their passion for re visiting ancient Indian workmanship and gives it a contemporary twist. The journey as creators, artists and revivalists is to strike a balance between the two worlds and to keep the relevance alive, by ways of re interpreting crafts, developing a range of hand crafted textures- their repertoire is extensive. The silhouettes keep the edginess alive with a measured mix of kitsch and couture.
As designers, their take on the design process is intuitive while an out of the box approach to colors and fabrics gives their creations a singular vocabulary- elegant, experimental, and dramatic. The current fascination with nomadic cultures as well as their interest in the hi point of the Islamic art, has kept the duo busy with their upcoming collections.
With a flagship store each in Delhi, Ludhiana and Chennai, the label also retails from Kimaya and Aza, Studio 8 and Aara Fashions in Dubai, as well as Sanskrit in Hong Kong.
We wanderers, ever seeking the lonelier way, begin no day where we have ended another day; and no sunrise finds us where sunset left us. Even while the earth sleeps we travel. We are the seeds of the tenacious plant, and it is in our ripeness and our fullness of heart that we are given to the wind and are scattered.”
― Khalil Gibran, The Prophet
The eternal wanderlust, a never ending quest for beauty and spiritual transcendence is the driving force behind Rimple and Harpreet’s debut collection at the India Couture Week 2014 edition. Inspired by the Nomads and the Wanderers that used to abound the North West Frontier Province, the Thar and Sahara Deserts, ancient Persia and Syria, the collection is an eclectic interpretation of their way of life, their journeys across the sands of time.
The sun-kissed stark landscapes of pebbles, sand and stone traversed by these perpetual soul searching drifters render the collection in hues of muted ivories and beiges.
Drawing from their own passion for historic art and ancient textiles and the wanderlust that takes the duo all over the globe exploring the same, Rimple and Harpreet have used hand crafted textures created by intricate fabric manipulation and crocheting, monogrammed coins, weaves of delicate tulles and gossamer silks, tessellations inspired by Islamic Art that are juxtaposed with fine hand embroideries to veritably breathe life onto the surfaces of each ensemble.
The silhouettes- dramatic capes and robes, sheer billowy jackets and regal cloaks keep the collection in tune with the times while giving a luxe and opulent homage to the kitsch styling of the eternal wanderer, in the duo’s hallmark luxurious aesthetic and style.
